REVAMPING A SMALL GARDEN

Brief: The small patio area was enclosed by a wall which the client wanted reduced in height to open up the garden rather than have the whole patio redone.

Solution: There were two main issues with the patio and wall. Firstly the patio was angular in design, yet the garden was full of curves - including the circular stepping stones across the lawn. Secondly there was a problem area on one corner where access to the garden was severely restricted.

After some discussion regarding the merit of reducing the height of the wall, we decided to get rid of it altogether.

The wall was taken out and a curve cut into the existing flagstones. The patio was jet-washed and given a general tidy-up. Some of the loose slabs around the back door and steps were re-mortared to make them more secure and stable.

Result: With the wall gone and a curve cut into the existing flagstones the whole area is opened up to the garden. The patio is no longer hemmed in. The hard landscaping is sympathetic to the overall look of the garden.
