LAYING A NEW PATIO AND PATH
Brief: A young couple had a patio and path laid the previous year, which was beginning to lift in places. An unsightly and dangerously raised area by a manhole cover, plus a step up to the path poised a risk to their two young children. The area nearest to the patio doors was too narrow and not suitable for a table. Also the lawn was uneven and difficult to mow.
Solution: A detailed count and measuring up of the site to ensure there were enough flagstones to relay them to a more family friendly shape allowing for a table and six chairs. The patio was raised to be level with the manhole cover and laid on 150mm of hardcore and sand to stabilise the base.
The height of the step was incorporated into the path, which was centred on the garage door. The small strip of grass to the left was removed.
The lawn was removed and the site completely dug over, with compost and sharp sand rotovated in to improve drainage. The whole scheme was edged with matching sandstone setts to make maintenance of the lawn much easier in the long term.
Result: A family-friendly patio and path with no edges or drops for young children to trip over. And hours of edging the lawn designed out forever.
