A WALLED GARDEN IN LEAMINGTON SPA
Brief: Link the new garage, office and sauna to be built at the end of the garden; with the large deck area at the rear of the house. The space needs to be good for entertaining as well as being suitable for young children.
Solution: With the garden being small and walled, the challenge was to get as much in; without appearing over crowded. A formal path of limestone was selected to echo the large tiles in the kitchen, creating a sense of continuity. With the garden facing south it was literally divided into east and west - reflecting the clients’ eclectic tastes, picked up on their travels around the world.
To the west of the path, low box hedging adds to the formal feel of the garden and helps define the path. Behind which are planted two Magnolia trees plus four fruit trees trained onto espaliers against the wall. A small water feature adds a calming tone avoiding any danger of ‘Little Ones’ falling into a pool of water.
To the east a small seating area is screened by Phyllostachys nigra (black-stemmed bamboo). Two small herbaceous borders introduce plenty of colour, scent and attract butterflies.
Betula utilis jacquemontii (Himalayan birch) with beautiful white bark is planted in the middle to add extra height.
Result: A private walled garden with lots going on for adults and children alike, linking the original features with the new build.
