PREPARING SOIL FOR PLANTS

One of the hardest jobs and certainly one of the most satisfying, is digging over a border in preparation for plants.

Ideally undertaken in the autumn and winter months, mainly because frost assists in the breakdown of the soil, but also it’s not so hot.

Most jobs tend to involve the removal of turf in the first instance or a large number of weeds. Once turf and weeds are out of the way, I dig down to one fork depth to loosen up the soil. A powerful cultivator can be used at this stage if the size of the area to be dug disappears worryingly towards the horizon.

Around the Leamington Spa area much of the soil is heavy clay which is ideal for nutrients but can be difficult to work with. Depending on the soil condition, sharp sand and compost can be added to improve drainage and soil condition. This is best rotovated in to create a fine tilth.

That’s basically it. Then it’s time for a long soak in a hot bath.

The reward for work well done is the opportunity to do more. JONAS SALK
